Process and Development- Assessment

The process for my first artefact on ‘Fear’ came about when I interviewed a friend of mine of what she feared most, the outcome of it was intriguing because she never openly spoke about it. Her story was quite unique as she feared of being rejected by people. This inspired me to look deeply into the real fears that people have and so I asked more and more people and the outcome was pretty much the same. I watched a video that was a social experiment on ‘what song are you listening to?’ by Tyler Cullen, which was made in New York where he asked random people on the streets of New York what song they were listening to on the mp3 players. It was interesting to see the response because whilst some where stereotypical other responses weren’t, and that started off my initial idea.

So from this video, I wanted to do something less light hearted and something more serious, and quite personal. I know that my fears are the same as my peers, but to really get people to open up to me was quite hard. The development of of my idea was to do vox pops, but I found it quite hard to get participants to interview, so I took the initiative to interview a couple of people, and whilst the other interview didn’t make it into the final edit, the one that did was interesting and very personal. When filming I had a view issues with sound, I recorded on an edi roll and the recording was too quiet and there was a slight buzzing sound which I had to edit in Adobe Audition to reduces the hiss. When it was edited the sound was too quiet in the final edit. I would like to re-record the whole thing again just to sort out the sound.

The progress so far is to find more people to interview as I want to start making a short documentary ranging from different ages just to see what the fear and why, so for example I would like to interview with older and mature people to see if their fear is different from mine. Maybe their fear changed overtime so if a person with children has a fear, is it for their children or for themselves? Or an elderly person could be death, or loneliness etc. These are the interesting questions that I want to ask.

Canon 60D

This week we were given access to use the Canon 60D cameras, which is a lightweight DSLR camera that can record video footage as well as taking stills. With all things there are Pros and Cons with these products. This product is compared to the Nikon D90 and so forth.

Pros:

-The DSLR camera is compact and lightweight easy for transport if you don’t want to carry industrial sized cameras.

-Films in full HD quality with an 18 mega-pixel resolution.

-It can film in a 24p which can give a cinematic picture.

-It has different settings so you can get the image or film you want to achieve. 

-You can get many different lenses

-It has a LCD screen so you can see what you are filming.

 

Cons:

-It’s a little pricey that’s only if you’re a student, but otherwise it’s not overly expensive however, lenses are costly such as the 50mm Macro lens which is around £1000.

-It’s difficult to hold still when filming especially freehand shots, this is because it’s mainly for amateur use and not professional, although professionals do use them.

– The buttons on the camera are a little bit fiddly, but this takes some getting used to.

– The Auto-exposure is bad under low light, this has to be done manually.

-Because it records in HD quality it’s not good to film serious dramas on it because you won’t get the look you’re achieving for.

– Recording audio sounds are abysmal and you need to have an external audio recorder. Otherwise the microphone on the camera will pick up sounds of the camera whirring and clicking which is something you don’t want to happen.

Overall this is a good little camera with it’s compact lightweight, easy to use and films great quality shots. I would say that this camera is good to film live sports or documentaries because it it picks up every detail making the image look crisp and clear.

Evaluation and Reflection

This module has taught me a lot about the media in terms of social media. I have enjoyed all the tasks that were set on this module as it allowed me to be creative although there are some things that I would like to improve upon. Earlier on in the module we had to create a mash-up remix video that was intended to go viral on the internet, this task was hard to conduct due to finding an idea that would have made sense we had to use ‘cassetteboy’ as an example to model our remix videos on. I felt that the remix video was strong as the narrative structure was strong and it appealed to the audience, but it was not funny enough to be entertaining and that was the main purpose of the task. We also had to make a presentation on a fairytale by using Prezi. I felt that there could have been more done on this to make it more interesting, I initially wanted to make more videos for the presentation, but I felt that the work was being left all to me and I was getting no input from my group at the time.

The next task we had was to come up with a brand for ourselves this was to make ourselves more professionally appealing as we aspire to be in the media industry. I felt this task seemed to help me understand the importance of representing yourself as a brand. The other task that I really enjoyed on this module was making a live TV show, at first things were a bit slow and we had encountered problems for most weeks in terms of members of the group not turning up, however during the last few weeks of the module I saw that we pulled together as a group and did whatever we could to make the best show we could possibly do. Filming live was a constant pressure, as we wanted to ensure that we didn’t make any mistakes whilst filming. Of course this was bound to happen, on the day of the filming we made a few mistakes, however we used the best take we had. I can say with confidence that our TV show was by far the best out of the others, because we had the best VTs and we managed to pull through together as a group. The website that we made alongside the TV show reflected on the branding and other tasks we did for this module fitted into it in the end as I now know that social media is just as important as making a TV show.

Personal Development

Within this module we have learned about creating a brand for ourselves as media producers. This was to represent our work and company as we media students want to aspire to be in the media industry. By creating my own logo I managed to consider myself as a media professional as branding sells your work not just only in media, but business in general. We created our logos using Photoshop, which allowed us to be creative on what we thought would represent ourselves.

We put our logos on our blog pages to create a professional element to our work; this is because our blogs are used to gain recognition as media professionals. Using it on our blogs had helped me become more professional as well considering to better myself. From learning about how important branding is I learned that I present myself as a package to my work and to other professionals that I would like to work with. We also had to consider making our social networking sites such as Facebook and Twitter pages look professional or at least keeping our private life hidden from the Internet, as many people would come across your profiles and judge you. We had to create other accounts on these social networking sites to represent our professionalism.

By doing this module we have certainly learned that it is important to consider ourselves as professionals instead of student as this allows us to gain experience when we go out into the real world and we would have the knowledge on how media is basically like any other business and that branding is the forefront of the company.

 

Transmedia

During this module we have been learning about transmedia, which is used today in the media to interact with their audiences.  The media industry has changed from whence it started and the Internet is a big part of peoples lives and it is important that the media continues to   be up to date with the world as they are the primary source of information in today’s world. We learned that transmedia is used to send a message via social networking sites such as Facebook and Twitter. Users use the Internet to convey a message or express views on certain subjects and interact with the rest of the world.

YouTube is the main source to interact with the rest of the world because over 1 billion users visit YouTube each month. It is a good platform to reach out to so many people. Here is an example normal people using transmedia to their advantage to express their views to the world.  The success of this process has changed the way audiences use the media, it has become a vital way to communicate with the world.

TV shows use the transmedia to keep their audiences interested and it’s a way to be interactive with them as well. They use the transmedia as a platform to reach a wider audience, by using twitter and facebook to get the viewer to interact with the show keeps the popularity of the show going. Our TV used the same method, we had our viewers use Twitter and Facebook to keep up to date with us they had to send in their tweets of them performing the challenge tasks with us.

Also very early on in the module we made mash-up videos and the purpose of doing this was to make it go viral. Now going viral is an important thing in transmedia because it gains popularity for the person who makes viral videos in the first place. It is a massive platform getting your work noticed on the internet as some people have become famous for it and possibly made careers out of something they did for fun. For example Dan and Phil are two normal people who have used the internet to their advantage. They make videos of them singing, performing tasks and generally being funny. They have a massive fan base and you can tell how popular they are through the many views they receive on YouTube. With the mass popularity they have other media platforms such as BBC Radio 1 have had interviews on the radio shows for the pleasure for their audiences.

Creative Critical Process

Throughout this module we have been learning the process of making a live TV magazine show. Along side the TV show we also had to make a website that related to the TV show. Since our group had Risky Business as out topic we chose to base the show around extreme sports. The website was an individual task and I researched into other TV shows such as ‘The One Show’ and how the layout for their website reflected on their show. I also looked at ‘Redbull’ since it has a variety of sports that they show and support I felt this would help me with my website I found that these websites were easy to navigate and very easy to read, organized and categorized it didn’t seem busy at all, and I wanted the users of my website to have the same experience when visiting my website.

With the style of the show that we made I wanted to reflect that into my website, extreme sports and the set design and the logo we used in the show was consistent throughout the website. This was to make sure that the users were familiar with the show. I used the logo for NetTV on the website but changed the colour to a vintage colour to look authentic and male orientated because most of our viewers are young males.

For the TV show we came up with a variety of ideas that related to the ‘Risky’ element of the show. The group split into two ideas as some wanted religion as a theme for the show and the rest wanted extreme sports. We felt that in order to develop the show we should chose something that would interest our audience as religion is something that is too sensitive to touch upon as a subject as we would not want to offend people along the way. I found that the ‘Redbull’ website helped a lot when making this website as I found had some relevance to what I was aiming for.

TV Studio Sessions: Week 6

This week we’re just going doing run throughs, we’re even working on set design as I helped put cardboard together to fit the boards in the TV studio. Some members such as the camera operators, the presenters and the Director worked on the filming of the VTs, which is on the challenge, were filmed as well. Things are coming together finally. Next week is when we film the show live. I had to help edit ‘The Top 5 Bails of the Week’, whilst Tom and Nathanael did the graphics for the VT I had to find videos and music and edit the whole thing together which took me around five hours for a 55 second clip.

I hope that we perform well on the day as things are looking up for us as a team. We just need to get timing perfect and also the members need to be on time and on form for the show next week. I know my role is only a runner, but I had suggested to the group that when our presenters perform the challenge task in the studio that we use a boom mike to record the sound, they first wear clip mikes, but when the do the task, there are wires hanging off them and this is a health and safety hazard as we do not want anyone to get hurt. I was assigned to be boom mike operator shortly afterwards.
